What is an excavator street brush?
A street brush (sweeping brush, sweeper) for excavators is a hydraulically powered cleaning attachment mounted on the excavator arm. The brush rotates and sweeps along the ground, collecting gravel, dirt, leaves, and concrete dust – without the need for a separate sweeping machine.
Why use a street brush on an excavator?
On an average construction project in Sweden, 5–15 tons of dusty material must be cleaned from adjacent streets. An excavator-mounted street brush does this without additional personnel – potential savings of SEK 10,000–50,000 per project.
Types of street brushes
- Cylinder brush – Single rotating brush, effective for large areas. Width 1,000–2,500 mm.
- Angle brush – Can be angled 20–40° to sweep material towards the roadside.
- Twin Broom – Combines a cylinder brush with an edge brush for cleaning along curbs.
- Brush collection system – With integrated collection basket; ideal for environmentally sensitive zones (airports).
Brush material and lifespan
- Steel wire bristles – Highest wear resistance for cement and asphalt dust. Lifespan 200–600 h.
- Polypropylene (PP) – Softer for asphalted surfaces without scratching. Lifespan 500–1,500 h.
- Nylon – High flexibility, dust-binding. Good for dry dust and fine gravel.
Capacity
A wider brush with high rotation speed cleans up to 8,000–15,000 m²/hour for a 2-meter brush in professional use.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size street brush do I need?
Common road widths (3–4 m): choose 1,500–2,000 mm. Construction site cleaning: 1,000–1,400 mm.
Can steel brushes damage asphalt?
Yes, on soft, new asphalt. Use polypropylene or nylon brushes on sensitive asphalt surfaces.
Does the brush need water for dust control?
Advanced models have integrated water spraying systems that bind the dust – highly recommended in densely populated areas and in dry weather.
Can a street brush handle snow?
Cylinder brushes work for lighter snow removal and gritting. For deeper snow: dedicated snow plows or snow blowers are more effective.
How long do the brushes last?
Steel bristles: 200–600 h. PP/nylon: 500–1,500 h. Regular maintenance checks significantly extend lifespan.
